HOW WAS THE OPERATING BEHAVIOR OF THE TIJUANA-TECATE RAILWAY IN 2017?

Currently, rail freight service has become a great alternative for industries that seek to obtain excellent transport benefits for their merchandise. Baja California Railroad (BJRR) focuses its efforts on offering a fully integrated service. Only in 2017, the company added one locomotive to its freight equipment, and with it a new opportunity to boost its competitiveness.

The railroad has contributed to the agilization of transport in the region,only in the month of March the largest number of exchanges were registerd; 381 loaded units, benefiting more than 20 companies in the industrial sector, according to the statistics given by the Logistics and Operations Department (Otáñez, A, 2018).
In 2017 LPG was positioned as the commodity with the highest number of movements, reaching 48.90%, followed by yellow corn with 15.66%, corn syrup with 10.75%, malt 9.28%, paper rolls with 7.34% and the remaining percentage was distributed between wood, plastics, canola, butter, among others. It is important to mention this last commodities presented a 5% increase in comparsion to 2016.

The railroad manages different units which allow transportation of different types of commodities, of these units, the ones that register the greatest number of movements are the tank car with 61%, followed by hoppers with 29% and boxcars with 8%.
During 2017, BJRR exchanged a total of 327,641 tons; only in March 40,013.55 tons were exchanged, which represent 13% of the total.
BJRR’s locomotives traveled a distance of 7,996 kilometers, using 45,940 gallons of diesel, a fact that confirms that transporting by rail is three to five times more efficient in terms of fuel consumption, compared to truck transportation.

2018 is a year full of challenges for BJRR, as there are more industries in the region that show interest in moving their merchandise by rail, offering the versatility of transporting a variety of commodities and soon different types of hydrocarbons, such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
